UPS SNMP card monitoring chain: UPS to SNMP card over the LAN to NMS or DCIM, email and SMS alerts, and a shutdown agent for servers and VMs

SNMP Cards: How a Silent UPS Becomes a Monitored Asset

Every UPS records the details that matter: load level, battery voltage, internal temperature, alarm history. On most sites nobody reads them. The unit sits in a corridor or a basement, someone glances at the display on the way past, and the IT team first hears from it during a blackout. A UPS SNMP card puts that information on your network for a small fraction of the price of the UPS.

A communication card costs a fraction of one hour of downtime. It is the cheapest insurance in the power chain.

What an SNMP card does

The card slots into the UPS communication bay and gives the unit its own IP address. From then on it serves a web dashboard, answers polls from your network monitoring system, and sends SNMP traps, alarms pushed the instant something changes: mains failure, transfer to battery, transfer to bypass, overload, high temperature, a failed battery test. Email and SMS notifications turn those traps into messages an engineer reads on a phone.

Most cards support the standard UPS MIB defined in RFC 1628 alongside the manufacturer’s own, so any mainstream monitoring platform can read them without custom development.

Graceful shutdown saves the data

Alarms tell you something is wrong. Shutdown protects what you cannot replace. Software agents on your servers and hypervisors listen to the card, and when remaining runtime drops below a threshold you set, they close applications, flush databases and power machines down in the right order. Virtual machines stop cleanly or migrate to another host. Storage arrays go down after the servers that write to them.

Without this, a long outage ends the same way every time: the battery runs flat and every server crashes at once. Manufacturers ship shutdown software for their cards, such as Riello’s PowerShield³ and APC’s PowerChute, with agents for Windows, Linux and VMware.

One view for IT and facilities

SNMP is the language network tools already speak, so the UPS appears on the same screen as your switches and servers. Many cards also speak Modbus TCP or BACnet to building management systems, which gives the facilities team the same data. Plug-in probes add room temperature, humidity, water leak and door contacts, so the card watches the room as well as the machine. On larger sites this is the first layer of a DCIM system.

LayerWhat it catches
SNMP cardAlarms, load, battery and bypass status, event log
Shutdown agentControlled server and VM shutdown before the battery runs out
Environmental probeRoom temperature, humidity, water leaks, door contacts
Three layers of visibility, all running from one communication slot.

What skipping it costs

Next to the price of the UPS, a communication card is a small line item. Next to one unmanaged outage, with corrupted databases, lost transactions and an emergency call-out, it costs almost nothing. The pattern we see in the field repeats itself: monitored sites replace batteries on schedule and catch a failing fan while it is still a fan. Unmonitored sites meet their UPS twice, at installation and at failure.

If your UPS is already installed, retrofitting a card is usually quick. On many models the card slides into the communication slot without shutting the UPS down; older units may need a short window or an external adapter.

Critical Energy Technologies supplies and configures SNMP cards, shutdown software and environmental monitoring for Riello, Kehua, Salicru, APC and most other brands, including retrofits on units already in service. For server rooms and data halls, monitoring is part of every data center solution we build. Tell us your UPS models and server platform and we will map out what to connect.
